Education GI Bill - The Key to Permanent Economic Growth

Bob Herbert reports that a bi-partisan group of Senators is proposing a GI Bill of Rights for Iraq War veterans. (Bush opposes it, but Congress may have enough votes to over-ride a Bush veto.)

As shown in the post WWII GI Bill, the Veterans benefitted by being subsidized in getting a college education and the Nation benefitted from the great increase in intellectual capital. The Government benefitted handsomely from increase of income tax revenues as the veterans succeeded in business and the professions. It was an all around magnificent win.

Given that wonderful experience, it would seem to like a very good idea to extend education subsidies to all college aspirants, not just Iraq war veterans.
