A disquieting op-ed article by Robert Harris in today's NYTimes compares the present day United States to Rome in the time of Pompey and Julius Caesar. In both instances, a republic was panicked by power-mad politicians to yield absolute power. We know what happened to Rome. Will the same happen to the United States?
